Problem Statement
Regulars wanted to skip the morning line; the bakery wanted fewer phone orders and clearer custom-cake intake. There was no app, no online menu, and custom orders happened over Instagram DMs.
User Research
I ran 6 semi-structured interviews with regulars and the bakery owner, plus a short Google Forms survey (22 responses). Themes: people want photo-led browsing, transparent allergen info, and a way to reorder their 'usual' in one tap.
Personas
- Maya, 34 — busy parent who pre-orders pastries on the school run
- Daniel, 58 — coffee regular who wants 'the usual' in two taps
- Renee, 41 — plans her daughter's birthday cake with photo references and dietary notes
Pain Points
- No way to see what's sold out before driving over
- Custom cake intake scattered across DMs, calls, and texts
- Loyalty punch cards forgotten at home
- Allergy info inconsistent between staff
User Flow
Open app → Browse menu (with live availability) → Customize item → Add to cart → Pick pickup time → Pay → Loyalty stamp auto-applied → Pickup with QR code at the counter.
Wireframes
Mid-fi wireframes tested two navigation patterns: bottom tab bar vs. category-first home. Usability testing (5 participants) showed the tab bar reduced time-to-order by 38% for returning users.
Accessibility
- WCAG AA contrast on all text + interactive elements
- Minimum 44×44pt touch targets
- Full VoiceOver / TalkBack labeling for menu items, prices, allergens
- Dynamic Type support up to 200%
- Allergen icons paired with text — never color alone
Final Solution
A friendly, photo-forward bakery app with a 3-tap reorder, a guided custom-cake wizard, and built-in loyalty. Usability testing showed a 92% task success rate and an SUS score of 84.
